Visitors to Lovina Beach in Bali’s serene north will find no shortage of things to do and places to visit during their stay in their island province. While North Bali and Lovina Beach in single are paramount for dolphin sighting tours as well as excellent snorkelling and diving sites, nature lovers will want to make the trek out to the north-west to visit the West Bali National Park.

[b]Beach Natural[/b]

Located nearby 60 kilometres west of Lovina Beach, the West Bali National Park is right drive west along the Singaraja-Gilimanuk highway. The whole trip should take no more than a concentrate of leisurely hours and makes for an excellent day-trip from your home-base in Lovina Beach. Known locally as Taman Nasional Bali Barat, the West Bali National Park is a sight to behold. Outside some 770 quadrate kilometres, the park takes up approximately 10% of Bali’s total land area.

The park is home to some ecological habitats such as a dry savannah, acacia scrubs, mangroves, montane and mixed-monsoon forests, and coral islands. To the north of the park are a 1 kilometre long beach, a natural reef and some islets. The park is also home to the tiny settlement of Goris in the east and a seaport at Gilimanuk in the west. Maybe the most impressive sight is the centre of the reserve, in which lies the remnants of four heavy extinct volcanoes dating back to the Pleistocene era. The largest of the four, Gunung Patas is a towering 1,412 metres at its highest elevation.

The diverse habitats and ecosystems within the park’s protected area also make it home to some 160 species of rare tropical birds and animals. The atmosphere here can be hotter and drier than that of south Bali and there are no places to buy water in the park, so make sure you bring plentifulness of water if you plan on going hiking. There are some excellent hiking trails in the park, as well as some excellent diving spots and even a temple. Hiring a guide from the national park office is mandatory when hiking in the West Bali National Park.
